DE Connection

The University of Alabama student ALA chapter wants to encourage all students in the SLIS program to be involved and to keep up-to-date on its activities. The distance program has been around for a relatively short time. We are aware that some of the distance students feel disconnected from campus and from one another. We hope that this blog helps with some of these issues. Most of the events take place in the Tuscaloosa area where the main UA campus is located, but we would like to include the distance students and the commuters as well to participate in ALA activities. We will be hosting happy hour events in the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham area in the Spring. I realize that there are students all over the country and we cannot hold events that will include everyone, but I hope that holding events in Birmingham will help. We also want to open communication via the blog to share ALA news, and encourage DE student to share thoughts and concerns. Please let us know if there are any other ways to help you feel included in the program and with the University. We also have an ALA Newsletter that comes out once a semester and the end of the term. We would love to have DE students participate. Articles are around 300 words on a library topic of your choice. It would be great to have DE students write about their experiences in the program, since it is relatively new. ALA will try to keep the website and blog updated regularly, with pictures from events, postings of activities, the Newsletters, and minutes from each meeting. http://daryl.slis.ua.edu/ala The student ALA chapter is for all of the students in the SLIS program, whether on campus or DE. Please feel free to post blogs with questions or comments, or contact officers, e-mail addresses for the officers are located on the ALA website. This blog and the website are still a work in progress so please be patient with us, and don't hesitate to send suggestions for improvement.
